Nathalie Emmanuel
Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel(born 2 March 1989) is an English actress. Emmanuel began her acting career with the theatre in the late 1990s. Then she was offered roles in various West End productions including The Lion King. Her birthplace was Southend-on-Sea in Essex, England, on March 2nd 1989. Her mother is Dominican as is her father, who is of half-Saint Lucian and half English descent. She has an older sister. Emmanuel remembers that her mom first took notice of her passion for and desire to become an actress during her time at the independent St Hilda's School, which was closed in 2014, and then later Westcliff High School for Girls grammar school. She said that she first noticed her passion for acting when she was only three years old. Her mother then suggested that she take dancing, singing as well as acting classes. In the West End production of The Lion King Young Nala played the character of Young Nala. The following year she was made a part in Game of Thrones as Missandei Daenerys Targaryen's interpreter. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, she confirmed that she received the news of winning the role in which she was employed at a store selling clothes as an assistant in the shop. In the year 2015, Emmanuel was promoted to a regular cast member in the series. Missandei was the sole prominent character who was female of colour in the show. In addition, her death scene, which occurred during her time in chains, was unpopular among fans who viewed it as an instance of fridging and invoking an image of slavery.Emmanuel later said to The Guardian: The reaction to the death of Missandei was so big because she was the only one. People who felt excluded or othered had felt connected to her or felt represented by them, particularly women of colour. There was a lot of pain when she passed away and so tragically. This is the way they intend to pay tribute to the one woman of their own race.
